HOW TO STYLE A CASUAL OUTFIT WITH VELVET
Happy Monday, ladies! How was your weekend?! It was our first weekend home in awhile and all I did was unpack. And sleep. And unpack some more. We picked up some of my old decorations from college (see my apartment tour here!) so we’ve gotten those put up and I’m loving it! The space is definitely way more cluttered than I like, but we’re trying to embrace it to keep the space feeling balanced until we can move into a house and s p r e a d o u t. ANYWHO, I’m obsessed with velvet. I want to wear it 24/7, but it’s such a fancy fabric, it can be a challenge to dress down. So that’s what I’m talking about today! I’m sharing a few velvet pieces and how to style them to create a more casual look!

EDGE IT UP
By far the easiest way to dress down your velvet pieces is to wear them in a more edgy look. In my outfit, I took a pretty burgundy wrap bodysuit and dressed it down significantly with a bleached denim jacket and ankle boots. High school me would have been obsessed with this outfit. And it’s still a fashionable look because it’s built off of classic pieces that never really go out of style.
WEAR IT WITH YOUR MOST CASUAL PIECES
Speaking of pieces that don’t go out of style, wearing your velvet favorites with your most casual pieces is a great way to dress it down. A velvet cami with a cute slip on and distressed, comfy denim (see below) creates an ultra-chic look that doesn’t feel like too much for the everyday. You could also wear a velvet blazer in the same way, just avoid wearing double velvet as that can add more formality to your look. A pop of the material to an otherwise everyday look is the best way to dress velvet down.
OTHER VELVET OUTFIT IDEAS
I created a few other outfit ideas for you in today’s post as well, because I know we don’t always own the same kind of velvet piece. So below I’ve styled and linked two outfits you can create today. I also created a Pinterest board dedicated to velvet, and I’ve pinned an overwhelming majority of casual looks to it just for the purposes of giving you a little more inspiration! You can check out that board here!
OUTFIT #1
This is the outfit I referenced above that is so simple it’s quite nearly a fashion formula, with just a few tweaks in footwear and sleeve length. I think this is, by far, my favorite everyday velvet look.
OUTFIT #2
I also wanted to create a more dressed down look for a velvet skirt. They were so popular this season and they’re totally gorgeous. I saw these Kate Spade glitter Keds and thought they would be the perfect touch to create a more dressed down look. They play well with the formality of the skirt, but the Keds style really lends itself to more casual pieces like a graphic tee, backpack, and moto jacket. All together, this creates an ultra chic and still casual look.
