SUMMER BEAUTY FAVORITES + ROUTINE
Happy Thursday, ladies! Let’s keep this intro short because today’s post is a BIG one! First of all, I hope you’re having fabulous week. Second, today’s post is a massive summer beauty round up, report, and routine. In this post you’ll find a handful of beauty products I love using in the summertime, a few mattefying products for my oily gals that aren’t too matte (because we all want that summer glow), and a complete breakdown of 4 different makeup routines I use in the summer to accommodate for the heat and varieties of summer activities. So, without further ado…

In the summertime, if we’re planning on leaving the house for something, I want to leave as soon as possible. I love the gorgeous weather and I want to get into it and enjoy it – rather than spending hours on my makeup look, only to have it melt in the hot sun. I shared four of my go-to routines at the end of this post, but I’m always testing new products and I haven’t found as many that I love and would recommend. So in this section I want to share the products I do truly enjoy and am not actively looking for replacements for.
In the widget below, I’m sharing the products I love and how I use them, but if there are any more specific notes they’ll be in these bullet points:
- The spray sucks on the Make Up For Ever setting spray, so I’ve put it in an old UD All Nighter bottle which works great! The liquid is just a little thicker somehow, but I find that that helps with staying power and reducing that powdery look on full glam days.
- I can’t link the Mary Kay Eye Primer, but this bad boy will hold your shadow like no other – year-round.
- The Kat Von D brow pomade is amazing, it lasts for.ev.er. But it dries sooooo fast, so use a light touch and blend in small areas of your brow rather than outlining first, and filling in second.
- The Jouer cream shadow stick is really nice, and blends super easily. But too much blending will affect how long it lasts on your eyes. I’m not pro with darker cream shadow colors, though, so I’ll take blend time over longevity until I get the technique down.
MATTEFYING PRODUCTS
My skin gets quite dewy no matter the season or product I use. It’s not something I mind terribly, but I do like to start the day with a more matte look so by the time the natural dewy finish sets in, it doesn’t look like a greasy mess. There’s a few products I like to use to mattefy my look, without overdoing it. I’ve linked them all in this widget for you, with some notes on how/when to use them!
The only product I can’t add to the ShopStyle widget is the setting powder I use, which is a banana powder from BellaPierre. It’s great for setting under the eye, or all over the face and gives a nice semi-matte finish.

I tend to play with a larger variety of looks in the summer time, based on what my day will be like. So here’s a list of the routines I use to get different looks for different kinds of days that will inspire your summer beauty routine:
P.S. I start every look, no matter the season, with an SPF product. That may be in my moisturizer, in my foundation, or in a standalone SPF.
Shopping (Inside/Outside)
My inside/outside days (or just inside) are the most similar to my routine for every other season, in fact, sometimes I’ll just stick to my 10 minute makeup routine. I do like to play with color and dewiness in the summer though, so I modify that routine in the following ways, depending on my mood:
- I spend a little more time on eyeshadow by blending 2-3 shades and adding a sparkly or luminous pop to my eyelid. This is the look I used in today’s post!
- Sometimes I skip the neutrals and follow a simple shadow look of 2-3 shades, but using something in a fun color like blue, green, pink, or purple.
- I do sometimes use a luminous base (or base products) even if I set my makeup with a powder because the powder tends to fight the oil more through the day, while the luminous base adds a bit of dewiness right off the bat. I keep a powder compact in my purse to touch up if my skin decides to get extra dewy later.
Outside Days
My outside routine is pretty similar to my poolside routine below, with just a few more products since my look will last a lot longer.
I start a medium coverage foundation, and use a light concealer if I need to hide any blemishes or dark circles. Whatever concealer I use, I set with a light bake. I alternate between cream and powder products on these days based on how I feel, but next I set my face with a light coverage powder foundation, then go into bronzer and blush (reversing the order if I’m using cream bronzer and blush). For the eyes, I use whatever bronzer I’m using or a bronzy eye crayon to emphasize my crease and pat a shimmery highlight shade on my lids. To finish the look, I apply mascara and setting spray.
Poolside
I don’t always wear makeup for a day by the pool, but if it’s more a thing like an event or something, I like to put in just a bit of effort, knowing it might just wash off. Mostly, the reason is pictures. All of our friends are photo-happy, so if I can get in a few snaps without looking like a gremlin, I’m good.
I start with an SPF BB cream, tinted moisturizer, or light coverage foundation just to even my skin tone a bit. Using a cream bronzer, and maybe a hint of a cream blush, I add a little color and shape back to my face. Occasionally I’ll add a pinch of cream eyeshadow all over my lid to add depth, but I always use a waterproof mascara. The mascara is mostly what I care about lasting because my eyes look so tiny without it. Finally, I’ll finish the look with a bit of powder and setting spray all over to set it until I ruin it in the pool.
Events
For events I start with a medium to full coverage foundation, and a full coverage concealer. I tend to apply my makeup right before we leave so it keeps fresh in the heat. I also use more powder products and a more regulated application so this one I’ll do in step format:
- Apply Foundation
- Conceal and bake
- Apply an eyeshadow primer
- Eyeshadow: The style varies a ton, but for an event I’ll typically spend a lot more time layering shades and creating a more dramatic look.
- Occasionally: Cream bronzer/contour to create shape, especially if there will be a lot of photos
- Wipe away bake and set my foundation (and cream products)
- Apply eyeshadow to my lower lid
- Blush and bronze (again, even if I used a cream already – staying power, baby)
- Apply eyeliner (varies in style, but I almost always use a nude in the lower waterline when my eyeshadow is darker)
- Brows, brow bone highlight, and face highlight
- Apply a heathy amount setting spray, which I pat in with a dampened beauty blender
- Curl lashes and add mascara
- Occasionally: Add falsies, and blend with a bit more mascara
