MY FAVORITE SUMMER LAYERING TRICK + LIFE UDPATE
Happy Monday, ladies! Long time, no chat! But I’ll save the life update for later in the post… I really want to get back to talking about style and fashion – I’ve missed it so! I have been feeling more inspired in the style-department though recently, so today I want to talk about one of the styling tricks I’ve been using a ton lately to get more out of my wardrobe. In the summertime, I love wearing skirts – but I don’t have the largest collection so I rely on a simple layering tip to nail my summer style.

Ta-da! Not exactly groundbreaking, but I find that even the most basic styling tips are so easy to forget if you don’t make frequent use of them. Also – the annoying thing about skirts is the tight waistband that just feels restrictive, can be a source heat, and impedes with BBQ binging. Most of my favorite layering dresses are only slightly fitted at the waist or are t-shirt style so I end up with a nice flowing fit.

When looking for dresses to layer, I try to keep my eye open for tank dresses and dresses with low or deep v-necklines. These styles give me the most versatility in my top choices. But I’ve also made great use of short-sleeve dresses and layering over looser tops like I did in this post.
Another trick I use is a safety pin! The neckline on my dress in this post is a boatneck style that wanted to show through the v-neck top. But because the dress was a nice stretchy cotton material, I was able to ruche the fabric together and pin it with a safety pin. It lowered the neckline just enough to work with this top!

Chris and I are in a bit of an ambiguous place right now. We’re waiting to find out if we’re staying in Colorado or moving back to California. That’s military life for ya. But the last month I also got massively busy substitute teaching (taking on more responsibility than most subs!) and the 99s chapter locally hosted the section conference which required a lot of time and brain space. I also got sick early in the month which affected my focus.
Annoyingly, I’ve lost my handle on my anxiety recently too. Breathing has become a daily struggle. To cope, the last month I’ve been sleeping way, way too much. And when I’m awake, I can only seem to bring myself to organize around the house. While this is technically productive because we’ll likely be moving soon (either to California or just to a different place in Colorado, Twitter followers know why!), it’s also a massive time-suck and not something that needs to take an entire day. Also I’ve reorganized the same spots like several times already which is definitely not productive.
Anyway, it’s summer break now so I’m done teaching for awhile. I’ve got some plans for this summer that I need to work on to make happen so here’s to trying to power through it all! I’m starting by putting my phone away and not letting it distract me (or make me anxious!) and only working on it for short periods of time.
Do you like layering your dresses? Or are you a skirt girl all the way?
