BASE LAYER IT UP
The key part of any Cubicle to Cocktail outfit is a good base. It’s imperative to create a foundation with basic pieces that will transition well from day to night. Black is always a great option. Black pants look conservative enough for work, but they also play well afterward. Depending on what you’re swapping into, you’ll also need a good undershirt. Since my sweater has a big, open back, I opted for a lace-back cami to take my look to the microbrew. It’s comfy under my work blouse, and looks great shown off later.
TEST YOUR LOOK
Before you leave in the morning (or even the night before), test your swap. I have pretty good faith in my wardrobe and how things fit. But when I’m incorporating new pieces, I always like to give them a test run. This is also a great time to make sure your switch will be easy and appropriate for how you plan to change it up. For example, because I have the undershirt, I can easily swap my pieces in the car. If you need to expose a little more, do you have a place to change? Or, if not, are one of the pieces fitted so that it’s difficult to change in a small space? Hash out these details early and you’ll save yourself some stress.
SWAP YOUR TOP (AND SHOES!)
The two easiest pieces to swap for any given Cubicle to Cocktail look is your top and your shoes. This sweater from Tobi makes such a great swapping piece. It’s just the right amount of dressed up, and the wide neckline makes it easy to chnage into in the car. For shoes, I swapped from black pumps to black ankle boots. The boots help dress down the look even further to make it more microbrew-ready. When rummaging through your closet, pay particular attention to shoes and tops that complement each other in a way where both could be used in the same look and change the vibe of it.
If you’re a minimalist, you may want to slim your wardrobe down to pieces that can play both sides well. Or you might chose to arrange your closet in a way that picking complementary pieces is easy (hang tops with their counter-parts). These tricks are especially helpful if you like to maximize your time and minimize your “What do I wear?” stress.
