3 FASHION MYTHS BUSTED FOR SUMMER
Happy Fri-YAY, ladies! I’m so ready for summer. I think the styles and trends this summer look so fun and creative and I can’t wait to give them all a try. But it seems like with every season, there comes all these rules and myths that attempt to dictate how we express ourselves through our clothes. I’ve heard or read about these three myths the most over the years, and they always kind of make me do that tilted head of confusion thing. Like most myths and ideas in general, they come from a reasonable place, but they just get a little out of control and become blindly followed as styles and techniques change. So it’s time to bust the myths and tackle summer with refreshed style.

MYTH ONE: YOU CAN’T WEAR BLACK IN THE SUMMERTIME
Myth, busted. You can wear whatever color you want in whatever season you want. It’s true, black isn’t the most summery color when it sits in your closet. But if you pair it with the right accessories and accents, you can create a unique and stand out summer look. The key is finding bright colors, summery fabrics (like wood or woven textures), and summer silhouettes. The dress in this post is cut like a pretty summer cocktail dress, but the black color makes it less flirty. With a brightly woven clutch and bright heels, though, it takes on a whole new life.
MYTH TWO: HORIZONTAL STRIPES ARE UNFLATTERING
Stripes are one of the ultimate summer prints. I mean, summer is the season for nautical style and that means stripes. But you shouldn’t fear horizontal stripes if you chose them carefully. Sure, some shapes and stripe widths can look a little funky, but there’s a simple trick for remembering which will be the most flattering without trying it on: thinner stripes call for more fitted silhouettes and wider stripes look great on baggier (or wider) cut pieces.
Remember, though, this is a trick, not a rule. If you love a piece, it’s worth trying it on because sometimes colors or even the weight of the fabric can affect how the stripe lays and how flattering it is.
MYTH THREE: YOU NEED A SIGNATURE STYLE
I read this recently in a post about rules for being ultra chic and it kind of sat wrong with me. Now, there’s nothing wrong with having a signature style. I think it’s something that definitely develops as you grow, but it’s so unfair to say that you must stick to that style to be chic and fashionable. I would say my signature style is a much more simple, clean cut look. But every now and then I want to wear looks that are more feminine, or edgy, or even a little less modest like the skirt on this dress.
Your style shouldn’t feel like a box to live in. Summer is the season to get out and experiment with your look, try new things, and just have fun. Fashion shouldn’t be hard and it definitely shouldn’t be restrictive.
