HOW TO DRESS LIKE A FEMME FATALE
This past summer quarter I took a film class. I didn’t love it. I’m not much of a movie person, I just have a hard time sitting still. But I thought, hey, maybe this class will give me a way to engage more or at least let me experience more movie genres to find what I like. Wrong. Even though I didn’t like the class itself , I did really like a couple of the movies. I love a good film noir and there’s nothing like the powerful figure of the femme fatale to suck me in.
I think when most people think femme fatale, they imagine a woman in dark lingerie with a sultry look. But the reality of these film noir vixens, at least my favorites, is that they were all pretty classy ladies. They dressed to impress, clean and smart. Sex appeal was definitely a component, but it came through more in their attitude and sharp wit. Outfits only complemented their personalities.
For one thing, they are sharp. A true femme fatale is always put together. Start with simple make up, you can’t go wrong with a cat eye, but don’t overdo it. Lipstick is a girl’s best friend. Pencil skirts and fitted slacks are a must. A midi is perfect because it’s sexy and sliming, but the length adds modesty and mystery. A little cleavage is just fine, but it’s really all about the shoulders. Keep those back, by the way. Good posture is not only very femme fatale, it’s very good for you. I know it looks like I’m plugging Bite Beauty here, but their lipsticks are actually just thin enough to keep in a tiny little clutch. No big hobo bags for the classy femmes. Keep accessories to a minimum, but a sweet hat is always a good idea. Just remember KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid. Practice your most dangerous come hither look, and you’ll have the femme fatale style down pat.
Hey, let’s make this a thing again, yeah?
