COZYING UP WITH MODCLOTH
Hey! It’s Fall! The weather was finally cool enough for me to break out a new pair of boots this week. I’m sadly watching my tan fade, but I’m so excited that I can start piling on the layers. I’m a firm believer in layering as the weather starts to cool. Between sitting in the library working on homework and running between classes, my body temperature is constantly changing. Finding pieces that look great alone, and layer beautifully together is my number one goal, and ModCloth more than satisfies my hunt.
The most important layering items in my closet are tanks, light and airy blouses, and knits. This season I’m also looking to incorporate more vests and blazers to add an extra layer of warmth. ModCloth has a killer selection of blazers and sweaters. I couldn’t resist styling some of my favorites into the perfect layered looks.
Having to run between inside and outside in cooler weather creates one of most difficult styling challenges a girl can face. Layering is obviously important, but the struggle is making sure that with every layer added or removed, your outfit looks just as complete. The key is to start at the bottom. Skinny jeans, booties, and a tank is foolproof even in a cooler summer, which is the kind of temperature you’ll face in a room full of people. With the windows open, a light chiffon blouse will add a little extra warmth. The buttons on this top are actually on the back, but I love the idea of turning it around and letting the ruffles create a more layered look. When you’re finally forced into the elements, a warm jacket or cardigan is the only thing you’ll need to add. Try to find one a little layered in the front, like the one featured, or one like this a larger layer. This style is a little easier to shrug off once you get back inside, but the extra fabric will still help keep your core warm and toasty.
Layers are fundamental when it starts getting cool, and they also make going from 8AM meetings to date night downtown a breeze. I love having easy to access layers to pile on when I go out in the evenings. Once that cool night air starts rolling in, there’s just no warming up. For an outfit like this, again starting at the bottom, I would tuck the blouse into the skirt, then top it with the sweater in the morning. The tie on tops like the one I styled, or this gorgeous fuchsia version, add a huge pop to a simple sweater without a whole lot of work. And, if your office warms up and the sweater needs to get lost for awhile, you won’t be stuck looking half dressed in a plain undershirt. A fun coat is a must for after-hours get-togethers and early mornings. Look for one in a classic pattern or somewhat neutral, but still vibrant color like this one. If you live in a colder northern climate, an outfit like this is essential for you. This fool-proof formula got me through three long winters in Montana!
Most of the time when I’m going to class or going out, I want to look as professional and put together as possible. When I’m out running errands, I like to have a little bit more fun with what I’m wearing. I probably wouldn’t wear these quirky kitten flats to class, but I would absolutely rock them on a coffee break. I don’t like feeling overwhelmed by layers while I’m out taking care of my to do list. There’s nothing worse than getting the sweats while you’re trying to get all those groceries in the house in a single trip. For that reason, I like to keep it simple with just a warm cardigan and ultra-soft tank. ModCloth has a great selection of cardigans. I’m positive you’ll find exactly what you need, weather you’re just starting to feel a chill in the air or if the cold has really set it. To top it off, an infinity scarf is perfect to fight the chill in the freezer aisle, but it also tucks away nicely in a big bag when it starts to get a little warm.
