It’s difficult right now to return to business as usual. My community is suffering from the events, but I feel it’s important for me, emotionally, to continue doing what I’ve been doing. I planned on publishing this post last Sunday, but wasn’t feeling up to writing it. Today, I’ve finished it off and I’m ready to share it with you. Summer is coming, and so are BBQ’s and days out in the sun. My next post will be about summer essentials, including picking a great bag that will work both pool side and out about. Today I’m sharing some advice for wearing a coverup in a way that doesn’t make it look like you’re just covering up. I know I always have to run errands while bikini-clad, so making that more grocery store friendly is always a challenge for me. Check out after the jump for a few tips I’ve picked up along the way.

Rocking a see-through or sheer coverup really relies on your accepting the fact that you’re wearing a coverup. Sheer and see-through are really on trend, which makes it easier. When it comes to accessories and styling, make it look like you just had to run into town for some extra margarita mix and then you’re headed right back to the pool. I paired a belt with this one because it forces the fabric to bunch up a little and some selective pulling makes it seem more opaque. Keep accessories to the minimum: simple or no jewelry and flat shoes are the way to go. Too much bling and you risk looking a little trashy and over made up.
Most of my favorite cover ups drive me crazy because they’re just a bit shorter than I’m comfortable with. Belting them is an absolute no because it pulls the fabric up. I try to focus as much attention to the upper portion by incorporating jewelry and accessories on that half of my body. I try to keep them simple enough that I can toss them in my bag and jump in the pool without having to worry about them breaking. Shoes are the next difficult part, flats and heels both emphasize the shortness. A mini-wedge in a neutral to skin tone color is the perfect in between. It doesn’t create so much length in your leg that the skirt seems extra short, but there’s just enough heel to make people believe that it really isn’t that short, it’s just the heel making it look that way. 1 inch is great, I would avoid anything over 3 inches. 3 is slightly tall, too, but I know I’m not the only one who struggles looking for a low heel, 3 inch wedges are pretty widely available in neutral colors.
Extra loose coverups are awesome when it’s hot, there’s not a lot of skin coverage and there’s lots of air flow, but they’re not the most modest to wear out, especially if you’re a little chest heavy. The first thing I recommend is belting it. This is awesome because you can pull the fabric down in the back so it holds the neckline up higher. Center the bulk of the fabric along your spine and let a little out on each side. Use an open knit cardigan or vest to hide what’s happening in the back. If it seems a little short, follow the shoe rules above. If you’re comfortable with the length, rock your favorite beachside sandals. The last thing you want to do is add a chunky necklace. It might seem counter-intuitive to draw attention to your chest, but you’ll actually be drawing attention to the glitter not the girls. Again, just pick one that you can slip into your purse (or a mini cosmetic bag in your purse) so you don’t have to worry about it busting.
Enjoy the poolside!
